Israel to Build Country’s First Musical Road to Enhance Driver Safety

Israel is set to create its first musical road on Route 90 in the Arava region, with a project budgeted at approximately 65 million shekels. The initiative, promoted by Transportation Minister Miri Regev, aims to improve driver alertness and reduce accidents caused by fatigue and lane deviation on this long and challenging stretch of road leading to and from Eilat.

The musical road will feature precisely spaced grooves cut into the asphalt, which produce rhythmic vibrations and melodies when vehicles drive over them at specific speeds. This engineering technique, already popular in parts of Europe and Japan, will allow drivers to hear a tune inside their cars while the external noise remains minimal. The project is expected to take up to 24 months to complete.

Beyond enhancing safety, the musical road is intended to become a unique attraction for drivers in Israel. The grooves will serve as a real-time auditory alert system to keep drivers engaged and attentive, especially in monotonous sections where the risk of drowsiness is higher. This innovative approach combines entertainment with practical safety benefits, marking a first for the country.
