China Unveils Roof-Mounted 'Artificial Rain' System to Combat Extreme Heat Waves

The story · English

As extreme heat waves sweep across China and Europe, a novel cooling solution has emerged from Shanxi province in northern China. The innovative system involves installing high-pressure misting nozzles on the roofs of high-rise residential buildings. These nozzles spray ultra-fine water droplets into the air, creating an "artificial rain" effect that cools the surrounding environment through evaporative cooling, similar to how sweat cools the human body.

This technology can reduce air and surface temperatures around buildings by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius within minutes. It consumes significantly less electricity than traditional air conditioning systems and cools streets and pedestrians without wetting them, as the tiny droplets evaporate almost immediately. By lowering the roof temperature from about 32.6 to 31 degrees Celsius, the system also decreases the heat entering apartments.

Already deployed in parks and bus stations across China, this simple yet ingenious method represents a new era in urban planning designed to address climate change challenges. The system has attracted international attention and may soon become a common feature in cities worldwide, offering a cost-effective alternative to expensive air conditioning during record-breaking heat waves.
