Democratic Party Chair Yair Golan Urges Reconsideration of Meretz Candidates

Yair Golan, chairman of the Democratic Party, along with CEO Omer Loveton Granot, sent an unusual letter to senior election officials within the party, including former judge Yaakov Shimoni, legal advisor Omri Segev, and petition review head Ram Pardes. They requested a renewed evaluation of Meretz candidates' eligibility for reserved slots in the upcoming elections. The letter emphasized respect for the independence of party institutions and the importance of a fair electoral process but stressed that the party's best interests require flexibility.

Golan argued that the alliance and agreement with Meretz is not merely a technical arrangement but a substantive, value-driven, and political pact designed to preserve Meretz's representation, its voter base, and the broad partnership under the Democratic Party umbrella. He defended veteran Meretz candidates, stating that those who have spent most of their public lives within Meretz and are publicly identified with its values should not be disqualified due to bureaucratic technicalities that would deny them the fundamental right to run and represent their constituency.

The letter, co-signed by Golan and Loveton Granot, clarified that their intention is not to bypass party rules or constitution but to interpret them in the spirit of partnership. They called for maintaining electoral integrity while honoring the agreement, members' wishes, and the united party's welfare. This move follows recent internal turmoil, including the disqualification of Meretz candidates Mossi Raz and Avi Dabush, highlighting ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party's election mechanism.
