New Member of Gadi Eizenkot’s Yashar Party Defends Roman Gofman Amid Criticism

Alex Reef, who recently joined the Yashar party led by former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, publicly defended Roman Gofman despite Eizenkot’s criticism of Gofman’s appointment as head of the Mossad. Eizenkot had sharply criticized the appointment, suggesting it was a reward for loyalty rather than merit. In contrast, Reef argued that opposition to Gofman was motivated by racism and unjustified bias. She questioned whether the attacks on Gofman were a form of "targeted sabotage" and rejected criticism solely because Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed him.

Reef highlighted her support for Gofman by citing praise from numerous senior IDF commanders and civilians familiar with his previous roles, including as commander of the Etzion Brigade and the Bashan Division. She acknowledged that while Gofman may not have acted perfectly in a controversial incident involving a minor, she believes everyone faces complex ethical dilemmas and should not be judged harshly. Reef also emphasized the importance of appointing Russian-speaking officials like Gofman to improve representation for marginalized communities in Israel.

Reef criticized the polarized political discourse that reduces public figures to either allies or enemies of Netanyahu, calling it simplistic and harmful. She pointed out that political figures can be praised for their actions regardless of political affiliation, referencing Gideon Sa’ar’s appointment of Gali Baharav-Miara as an example. Reef’s statements reflect a nuanced stance within the Yashar party, balancing criticism of Netanyahu with support for some of his appointees.

Eizenkot announced Reef’s joining the party on Tuesday, marking a notable addition given her leadership role in the "Lobby of the Million" organization. The debate over Gofman’s appointment continues to highlight tensions within Israeli security and political circles regarding loyalty, merit, and representation.
