Ukrainian Billionaire Vadim Yermolaev Critically Injured in Monaco Bomb Explosion

Vadim Yermolaev, a Ukrainian oligarch with ties to Moscow who fled Ukraine after the war with Russia began, was critically injured in a bomb explosion at the luxury building where he lived with his wife and four children in Monaco on Monday night. Yermolaev, his wife Anna, and their 13-year-old son were all severely wounded and are currently fighting for their lives in hospital. Witnesses described Anna as covered in blood with her legs amputated, and their son lying on the ground bleeding.

Security footage captured a suspect placing a bag filled with nuts and bolts at the building entrance shortly before the blast. The suspect, wearing a black hat, sweatshirt, and white jeans, was seen fleeing the scene, prompting a police manhunt. Four other people suffered injuries from shattered glass caused by the explosion.

Yermolaev, who made his fortune in real estate and alcohol production in Crimea, renounced his Ukrainian citizenship and acquired Cypriot nationality. In December 2023, Ukraine imposed sanctions on him for selling alcohol in Russian-annexed Crimea. He has faced criminal allegations, including money laundering, which he denies.

Monaco's Prime Minister Christophe Mirman initially called the incident a terrorist attack but later clarified it was a deliberate explosion involving a bag of nuts and bolts, marking the first such event in the principality's history. Monaco, known as a tax haven and a low-crime haven for billionaires and celebrities, has recently been linked to corruption and mafia-style money laundering, including groups originating from Ukraine.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue searching for the suspect responsible for the bombing.
