Ukrainian Oligarch Vadym Yermolaiev Severely Injured in Monaco Explosion Suspected as Targeted Assassination

A powerful explosion rocked a luxury residential building in Monaco late on June 29, injuring at least three people, including Ukrainian oligarch Vadym Yermolaiev, his wife, and their 13-year-old son. The blast, which occurred around 9 p.m. on Rue Roquebrune near the French border, was caused by a bomb concealed in a package containing screws and metal balls, designed to maximize damage. Authorities described the incident as a deliberate attack and launched a manhunt for a suspect captured on security cameras fleeing on foot toward the nearby French town of Beausoleil.

Yermolaiev, a wealthy real estate entrepreneur who has resided in Monaco for several years, was seriously wounded along with his wife, while their son sustained lighter injuries. All three were hospitalized in Nice, France. Four additional people were treated for shock and glass-related injuries. Ukrainian authorities had imposed sanctions on Yermolaiev in December 2023 due to his business activities in the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula, where Kyiv has recently intensified military efforts to sever Russian supply routes.

Monaco's State Minister Christophe Mirman confirmed the attack's intentional nature, noting eyewitness accounts might help identify the suspect. Prince Albert II condemned the bombing as a "heinous crime" and a shock to the Monaco community, emphasizing full cooperation with French authorities. Over 100 emergency and security personnel responded, with the area cordoned off and a helicopter deployed. The suspect's whereabouts remain unknown, raising concerns he may have fled Monaco or France.
