JetBlue Plane Collides With Drone Near JFK Airport, FAA Investigates

On Monday, a JetBlue Airbus A321 flying from Las Vegas to New York reported a collision with a drone during its approach to John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK). The pilot informed air traffic control that the drone struck just above the cockpit at approximately 3,000 feet over the New Jersey coastline. Despite the reported impact, the aircraft landed safely at JFK, and a post-landing inspection found no visible damage. JetBlue emphasized that safety remains their top priority and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Hours later, a helicopter pilot in the same area reported a near-miss with a small remotely controlled aircraft, prompting a separate FAA inquiry. FAA regulations generally restrict drones to a maximum altitude of 400 feet, with stricter limits near airports. However, many commercial drones can reach altitudes exceeding 3,000 feet, raising safety concerns. Scott Stupman, Vice President for Regulatory Affairs at the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, noted that while such flights violate rules, they can still occur.

The FAA records over 100 drone sightings near airports each month, highlighting the risk of drone and manned aircraft flight path intersections. Drone operators violating flight restrictions face penalties including fines, license revocation, and drone confiscation. The increased use of drones in conflict zones like Ukraine and Iran has heightened authorities' awareness of potential threats posed by unmanned aerial vehicles in civilian airspace.
