Class Action Seeks NIS 240 Million Over Expired Products Sold by Carrefour in Israel
A class action lawsuit estimated at around 240 million shekels was filed last week at the Central District Court against Global Retail K.Y., the operator of the Carrefour brand in Israel. The suit alleges that Carrefour, which operates approximately 150 branches nationwide, has been selling hundreds of pre-packaged food and beverage products past their expiration dates, including highly perishable items such as baby food, dairy products, eggs, and meat. The complaint highlights that this issue is prevalent in branches outside Tel Aviv, particularly in peripheral cities like Ashkelon, Afula, and Beit She'an, where expired products were found in large quantities.
The plaintiff, a resident of Afula represented by attorneys Roy Bachar and Avraham Yehuda, conducted over 50 visits to 35 Carrefour stores across Israel from late October 2025 to the present. He documented numerous expired products, some past their expiration by hundreds of days. For example, baby food in Beit She'an and Afula was found expired by more than 100 days. In Ashkelon, expired olive oil bottles (124 days past expiration), corn dim sum (110 days), and entrecote steaks (79 days) were recorded. Even newly opened stores in Ofakim and Afula reportedly stocked expired products from their opening day.
The lawsuit requests court orders compelling Carrefour to immediately remove expired and near-expiration products from all its branches. The plaintiff also alleges that Carrefour fails to notify consumers or offer discounts on products nearing expiration.
Carrefour responded by calling the claims baseless and defamatory, emphasizing that the lawsuit has not yet been approved by the court. The company stressed its commitment to food safety and quality, citing a rigorous quality control system led by Dr. Tzipori from the Israeli Institute for Quality and Safety, with 150 surprise inspections monthly and ongoing daily, weekly, and monthly checks. Carrefour also denied the claim that it treats Tel Aviv branches differently from others. The company stated it will fully respond during the legal proceedings.
