German Lake Pool Sparks Debate After Restricting Entry for Non-German Speakers

A bathing area at Lake Heidbad in Halle, Germany, has triggered controversy after management began denying entry to visitors who do not speak German well enough. Site manager Matthias Nobel said the policy is based only on safety, not discrimination. He said, “We need to be sure that visitors understand the bathing rules and ensure the safety of our guests.”

Nobel, who is also a certified lifeguard, said each case is assessed individually at the entrance, with the main question being whether a visitor can understand safety instructions. He added that lifeguards must be able to communicate directly with swimmers in an emergency. If an entire group arrives without anyone able to speak German, staff have “serious concerns” about letting them in.

The decision followed an incident in which Nobel rescued a toddler from deep water. The lake can reach depths of up to 13 meters, and Nobel said that on hot days with large crowds, signs alone are not enough to guarantee safe behavior. Since the rule took effect, several visitors have already been turned away at the entrance.
