European and US Jews Report Unprecedented Insecurity Amid Rising Antisemitism

The story · English

Jewish communities across Europe and the United States are experiencing a pervasive sense of fear and constant vigilance, with many individuals choosing to conceal Jewish symbols, avoid synagogues in the evenings, or refrain from speaking Hebrew in public. Community institutions, including kindergartens and schools, are now operating under heavy security measures, resembling sensitive installations rather than typical educational facilities. A widespread feeling among community members is that boundaries have been crossed, as incidents of vandalism, hate speech, verbal harassment, and direct threats have become commonplace. Many feel local authorities are struggling to provide adequate protection.

For generations who believed 20th-century antisemitism was a relic of the past, the current reality is deeply shocking and fosters a growing sense of isolation against a resurgence of hatred. This new reality compels Jewish communities to fundamentally alter their lifestyles and their sense of belonging in public spaces. Events previously confined to highly sensitive locations are now part of daily life, with parents fearing for their children's safety in educational settings and community leaders dedicating substantial resources solely to securing gatherings and cultural events.

Beyond the tangible physical threat, the deepest fear stems from a sense of abandonment and the social legitimization antisemitism is gaining in public spheres and on leading academic campuses. Many Jewish students report a hostile atmosphere where they feel compelled to hide their identity, fear expressing opinions, and even conceal religious symbols due to potential harassment or attacks from peers. This sentiment extends to the digital realm, where waves of hate spill from social media directly into personal inboxes and manifest as direct threats.

For many Jews in the US and Europe, who viewed their countries of residence as safe havens, a pressing existential question arises about the future and the possibility of continuing to live openly and proudly as Jews without constant fear. Community leaders and Jewish organizations globally are continuously pressuring decision-makers and local police to intensify enforcement, severely punish those involved in hate incidents, and ensure citizens' safety. However, until a solution is found to restore security to the streets, the prevailing sentiment for many remains painful: the realization that the decades of peace and personal security they took for granted are no longer assured.
