Israel's National Security Minister and Police Commissioner Meet at Western Wall

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Police Commissioner Danny Levi met at the Western Wall on Monday morning, shaking hands after a prolonged period of tension. The meeting occurred at the Priestly Blessing ceremony, where Ben-Gvir was praying and Levi was present as part of police preparations.

The rift between the two officials stemmed from disagreements over police appointments and budget demands. Ben-Gvir had previously announced he would not approve new appointments during the election period, except in exceptional cases, while Levi's office indicated he intended to proceed with the appointments and expected the minister's approval.

Relations soured further when Levi met with Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara without Ben-Gvir. Following this, Ben-Gvir sent a sharp letter to Levi, stating he would not allow the police to become a "puppet on a string" for the Attorney General and asserting his authority as the responsible minister.

Despite the ongoing dispute, Levi convened senior command staff and approved a series of appointments, though their implementation requires the minister's final approval. Ben-Gvir's associates viewed this as an attempt to pressure him through officers awaiting promotion. Budgetary issues also remain a point of contention between them.

Sources close to both men believe they will hold further discussions soon to bridge the gaps and resolve the crisis.
