Hundreds Protest UN Headquarters Demanding End to Global Antisemitism
Hundreds of members of New York's Jewish community gathered on September 23rd at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, adjacent to the United Nations headquarters, to protest the global rise in antisemitism. The demonstration, organized by the UJA-Federation of New York and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, urged world leaders attending the UN General Assembly to address the escalating issue of antisemitism.
Eric Goldstein, CEO of UJA, stated that politicians at the UN were not adequately addressing global hatred. The event featured speakers from various faiths and individuals who had experienced hate crimes. Devorah Halberstam, whose son was killed in a 1994 Brooklyn terrorist attack, delivered an emotional speech, calling for an immediate halt to antisemitism. Other speakers, including Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt, criticized what he termed "deliberate passivity" in the face of the threat.
Among the speakers were George Zamot, a driver who intervened in an attack in the Upper West Side, and Shalev Biton, a survivor of the Nova music festival, who spoke alongside Younes Alqarnawi, a Bedouin who saved his life. A small counter-protest by the anti-Zionist group Neturei Karta was also present.
The organizers emphasized that the rally aimed to ensure the community's concerns were considered during the UN's key diplomatic events.
