Trump Again Targets Italy’s Meloni, Prompting Sharp Rebuke

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Maariv על ידי baba
The story · English

President Donald Trump has again attacked Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, accusing her of refusing to help him on Iran in order to improve her standing. Meloni answered sharply, saying Italy remains a sovereign state and that Trump’s criticism crosses a line.

The exchange, reported on June 20, 2026, was seen in Italy as an unusual personal and political attack on a leader who was once regarded as one of Trump’s closest allies in Europe. According to international reports, the dispute over the summit image quickly escalated into a broader diplomatic problem.

Italian officials rallied behind Meloni, and Italy’s foreign minister canceled a planned trip to the United States. Meloni said her public role is judged by her ability to defend Italy’s national interest, writing, “That is exactly what I have always done.”

She also pointed to the American military bases in Italy, saying their use is governed by agreements that Rome has always respected and that cannot be violated while she remains prime minister. In her words, “Italy remains a sovereign country.”
