Rotem Zilver, the pseudonym of a man in his 30s from central Israel, founded the Facebook group 'Tel Aviv Confessions - TLV Confessions' eight years ago as a student seeking a space to share personal experiences, particularly those related to his chronic illness, colitis. The group has since grown into a massive online community with nearly 200,000 members on Facebook and 77,000 followers on Instagram, becoming a platform for anonymous confessions that often go viral and spark widespread discussion.
Zilver, who has never revealed his true identity, stated that the group's initial viral success stemmed from a post comparing a McDonald's hamburger to that of a well-known chef's restaurant. This post reached half a million people, leading to thousands of submissions and establishing the group's core appeal: anonymity that allows users to share embarrassing, funny, or deeply personal stories without fear of judgment. This contrasts with the curated, often 'fake' personas presented on platforms like Instagram.
The confessions range from humorous dating mishaps and awkward encounters to more serious issues. Zilver noted a significant increase in posts from reservists struggling with mental health and marital difficulties following the October 7th attacks, some expressing suicidal ideation. He has established a direct line to the police and the mental health support organization Eran to handle such critical cases, emphasizing the heavy responsibility that comes with managing the platform.
Beyond confessions, the group has inspired related communities, including 'Girl to Girl,' a platform for women seeking new friendships, which Zilver co-founded after a confession from a woman with no friends to invite to her wedding. He has also compiled the most viral and impactful confessions into a book, featuring psychological analysis and insights into online behavior, including a dedicated section on sexual harassment and assault.
Zilver continues to manage the group solo, sifting through hundreds of daily submissions. He sees the platform as a way to help people feel less alone and to provide a much-needed outlet for expression in an increasingly isolated society, particularly among young adults and married couples. He plans to continue managing the group for the foreseeable future, though he acknowledges it may become challenging if he becomes a father.
