Confessions Platform Founder Reflects on 8 Years of Viral Posts
Rotem Zilber, the pseudonym of a man in his 30s from central Israel, founded the "TLV Confessions" Facebook group eight years ago as a student seeking a space to share personal struggles, including those related to his chronic illness, colitis. The group, which now boasts nearly 200,000 members on Facebook and 77,000 followers on Instagram, has become one of Israel's most influential online communities, known for its viral and often controversial anonymous confessions.
Zilber's initial motivation stemmed from a lack of platforms for sharing intimate or embarrassing experiences that couldn't be discussed with family or friends. The group's explosive growth began after a single post went viral: a confession claiming a McDonald's hamburger was superior to one from a renowned celebrity chef's restaurant. This post reached half a million people, leading to thousands of submissions and establishing the group's core appeal: anonymity that allows for unfiltered honesty.
The platform has become a counter-narrative to the curated perfection often displayed on Instagram, offering a space for raw, real-life stories. Zilber receives hundreds of confessions daily, ranging from humorous and embarrassing to deeply personal and concerning. He notes a significant increase in posts from reservists struggling with mental health issues and suicidal ideation since October 7th, which he reports to the police.
Beyond managing the confessions, Zilber has taken on a significant responsibility, reporting suicidal posts to the police and collaborating with the organization Eran. He also co-founded "Girl to Girl," a Facebook group for women seeking new friendships, inspired by a confession from a bride-to-be with no friends to invite to her wedding. To commemorate the group's eighth anniversary, Zilber has published a book compiling viral posts, featuring psychological analysis and insights into the nature of viral content and online behavior.
Zilber, who still uses his pseudonym to maintain the community's sense of anonymity, believes the platform addresses a profound sense of loneliness prevalent in contemporary society, particularly among singles. He plans to continue managing the group, though he acknowledges the demanding nature of the role and its potential conflict with future family life.
