Irish Broadcaster Scales Back Coverage of Matches Against Israel

מאת זוהר צלח

The story · English

Ireland's public broadcaster, RTE, will broadcast two upcoming UEFA Nations League matches between the Republic of Ireland and Israel, fulfilling contractual obligations. However, in a significant departure from standard practice, RTE will forgo its own commentators, pre- and post-match studios, and advertisements or sponsorships related to the games.

The decision has sparked controversy from opposing sides. Some viewers are calling for a complete boycott of the matches, while others are angered by the reduced coverage, viewing it as a compromise of their right to a normal broadcast of their national team's games.

RTE stated that while they are contractually bound to air the matches, they will use the international feed for commentary and will only have a minimal technical crew present. News coverage of the matches and related events will continue.

Critics who want a full boycott argue that any broadcast, even with reduced commentary, is unacceptable. They believe RTE should have refused to air the games altogether. Conversely, others criticize RTE for what they perceive as a performative display of morality, arguing the broadcaster is shirking its duty to the Irish public by not providing a standard broadcast.

The first match is scheduled for September 27 in Debrecen, Hungary, designated as Israel's home game. The return leg, originally planned as Ireland's home match, is set for October 4 in Bačka Topola, Serbia. The controversy surrounding these fixtures predates RTE's broadcast decision, with the Football Association of Ireland having previously called for Israel's exclusion from European competitions but ultimately agreeing to play the matches as per UEFA regulations.
