British Jewish Students Conceal Identity Amid Rising Antisemitism

The story · English

A 15-year-old Jewish girl in the UK told her classmates she was Turkish out of fear of revealing her true identity, later crying to her parents that she wished she wasn't born Jewish. This incident highlights a disturbing trend in British schools where Jewish students are hiding their heritage due to fears of becoming targets of attacks from peers. The volunteer organization Parents Against Antisemitism (PAA), founded this year, has received over 110 reports of hate incidents in educational institutions, from kindergartens to high schools.

In one case, a Jewish student had to take final exams in complete isolation for his safety. Other incidents include children covering their ears when their teacher announced a lesson on Judaism, and mocking a stabbing incident in the Golders Green neighborhood. Some students have questioned Holocaust survivor testimonies, claiming the Holocaust was fabricated, or linking it to the war in Gaza.

Sasha Hoffman, a PAA volunteer and mother of three, described the situation as heartbreaking, stating, "Are we really a free and tolerant society if a child lies about who she is? It's terrible." Hoffman called antisemitism a "plague," noting that conspiracy theories are spreading even in classes without any Jewish students.

Students in Jewish institutions face verbal abuse on buses and during sports competitions against other institutions. In general schools, harassment includes physical violence, exclusion, and the use of Nazi motifs. Hoffman emphasized, "We are not just protecting Jewish children, we need to protect the whole society."

These alarming statistics are being forwarded to the Community Security Trust (CST) and a special government review committee. Many parents are hesitant to report incidents for fear of worsening their children's situation in the education system, while school administrators often ignore complaints or dismiss them with excuses. Suspensions for antisemitic behavior are extremely rare, with Hoffman concluding, "Schools are so hesitant to use the tools at their disposal. They end up managing the child who was harassed instead of dealing with the perpetrators."
