כ-20 מנהיגים יהודים-אמריקנים, לצד הסנאטור הדמוקרטי לשעבר אל פרנקן, הודיעו על תמיכתם בעבדול א-סייד, המועמד הדמוקרטי לסנאט מטעם מדינת מישיגן. א-סייד ספג ביקורת קשה מצד הקהילה היהודית בארצות הברית בשל עמדותיו האנטי-ישראליות. במכתב פתוח שפרסמו, הודו החותמים כי עמדותיו של א-סייד אכן "עוררו דאגה", אך הדגישו כי הן אינן חריגות כפי שנטען. א-סייד ידוע כמתנגד נחרץ לסיוע הצבאי האמריקני לישראל, ואף האשים את צה"ל בביצוע "רצח עם".
