Nepal Tourism Suffers Second Blow as Tourists Cancel Trips Post-Floods

The story · English

Nepal is facing a significant economic setback as tourists worldwide are canceling trips en masse following recent devastating floods, despite key travel routes remaining open. This wave of cancellations, with over 20% of bookings in Kathmandu and Pokhara reportedly canceled, represents a "second disaster" for the country, which is still recovering from the initial floods that claimed over 1,000 lives and left more than 5,000 missing.

The tourism sector is a vital part of Nepal's economy, contributing approximately 6.7% to its GDP and providing employment for over a million people directly or indirectly. In response to the cancellations, the Nepal Tourism Board has launched an international campaign using the hashtag #NepalCalling. Nepal's Minister of Tourism, Khadak Raj Paudel, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shishir Khanal, have appealed to the international community, emphasizing that major tourist destinations like the Kathmandu Valley, Annapurna and Everest regions, and Chitwan National Park, along with the country's airports, are fully operational and safe.

Roi Assaf of "Magalei Olamot," a boutique tour company, stated that the perception of widespread flooding is inaccurate, calling the event "local" and "over." He noted that while many clients are fearful, he has reassured those traveling with him, highlighting that trekking is ongoing and that a damaged road is expected to reopen soon in an improved state. Assaf drew a parallel to canceling travel to Israel due to a localized flood near the Dead Sea.

Shahar Idan, Vice President of Operations at Israeli travel company MyTrip, stressed that the cancellations disproportionately harm vulnerable local populations, including guides, porters, guesthouse owners, and drivers. He explained that October is typically a preparation month for the peak dry season starting in November, a period crucial for the livelihoods of many Nepalis who rely on this income for the entire year.

Experts on the ground advise tourists planning to visit Nepal in the coming months not to cancel their trips but to proceed with caution. They recommend consulting well-informed professionals who have real-time information on route conditions, choosing stable and open regions, and prioritizing safety. The message from Nepal is clear: travelers are encouraged to support the country economically and humanely during this critical time.
