World Synagogues Fortify Security Amidst Unprecedented Antisemitism Surge

Jewish communities worldwide are bracing for the High Holy Days with heightened security measures due to an unprecedented surge in antisemitism since the start of the war. Large-scale protests in European and US cities have prompted community leaders and security organizations to work around the clock to protect tens of thousands of worshippers expected at synagogues.

The fear of lone attackers or organized terror has led to a significant shift in security strategy, with prayer facilities now operating as fortified targets. In key European nations like France, Britain, and Germany, close and extensive cooperation is underway between community boards, local police, and intelligence agencies. Authorities have pledged increased police presence, with armed officers or soldiers potentially deployed around community institutions in high-risk areas during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Streets near major synagogues will be completely closed to vehicle traffic, and heavy barriers will be erected to prevent vehicle ramming attacks. These volunteers will form the initial security layer at entrances, with some communities requiring worshippers to present identification and pre-issued entry cards to prevent unauthorized access. Physical security measures have also been dramatically enhanced, with many communities investing heavily in advanced surveillance cameras, double steel doors, and metal detectors to screen for concealed weapons.

Despite the emergency atmosphere and constant warnings, rabbis in the diaspora are urging the public not to succumb to antisemitic intimidation, to attend synagogues in large numbers, and to demonstrate that the voice of Torah and prayer will never be silenced.
