Musk's SpaceX buys AI coding startup Anysphere for $60 billion
SpaceX, the company controlled by Elon Musk, said on Tuesday it will acquire Anysphere, the maker of the Cursor coding platform, in a deal valued at $60 billion. The purchase is described as one of the largest transactions yet in artificial intelligence, and it comes just days after Musk’s company went public on Nasdaq at a valuation of more than $2 trillion.
Cursor has become one of the world’s most popular coding tools among developers because it uses AI to help write code, fix bugs and build software. Founded in 2022, Anysphere has grown rapidly, and its annual enterprise revenue is estimated at about $2.6 billion.
SpaceX said the acquisition is intended to strengthen its position in enterprise AI and expand its AI-based software development business. The company also expects the deal to help xAI, which develops the Grok chatbot, close the gap with leading rivals in AI coding, including OpenAI and Anthropic.
Cursor is also expected to gain access to large-scale computing resources through the deal, which would allow it to develop advanced models and tools independently.
