Pregnant Woman Nearly Loses Sight Due to Severe Vomiting, Saved by Vitamin B1

מאת אפרת ברינר

The story · English

A 41-year-old pregnant woman in her 16th week of gestation nearly lost her sight due to severe, persistent vomiting that caused her to lose 15 kilograms. After weeks of constant nausea and vomiting, her vision deteriorated significantly, to the point where she could only detect hand movements in one eye and count fingers at close range in the other. She also experienced difficulty walking and slowed cognitive responses.

Upon hospitalization, doctors were initially puzzled by her condition, which included blurred vision, nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), and signs of kidney impairment. For two days, she received intravenous fluids containing sugar, a treatment that could have worsened her condition by depleting her already low levels of Vitamin B1, which is essential for metabolizing sugar.

When doctors suspected a Vitamin B1 deficiency, they administered a high dose intravenously. Within hours, her condition began to improve, and her vision returned to normal within 24 hours. Her cognitive function and kidney function also normalized.

This case highlights a rare but life-threatening pregnancy complication known as Wernicke's syndrome, caused by severe thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency. The article stresses the importance of immediate Vitamin B1 administration for pregnant women experiencing severe vomiting, weight loss, and neurological or visual disturbances, rather than waiting for extensive diagnostic tests. The woman was later delivered via emergency C-section at 34 weeks due to fetal distress, but both she and her baby, examined at two months old, were healthy with normal vision.
