George Clooney Defends Mark Ruffalo Amid Antisemitism Claims

George Clooney has publicly defended actor Mark Ruffalo against accusations of using antisemitic imagery, stating his support for Ruffalo's right to free speech. The controversy arose after Ruffalo voiced opposition to a major deal involving Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. Paramount accused Ruffalo of employing antisemitic tropes in his criticism, particularly concerning the Alisson family, who are reportedly linked to Paramount and have ties to Israel.

Ruffalo has vehemently denied the allegations, calling the accusation "appalling and fundamentally dishonest." Clooney, speaking at the Venice Film Festival, emphasized the importance of free expression, even when disagreeing with the sentiment. "We are not going to ban freedom of speech," Clooney stated during a press conference. "I believe in freedom of speech even when I don't agree with it entirely. It's important. In fact, it's part of the way democracy works."

Clooney also commented on the proposed merger itself, expressing skepticism about its financial viability and concern over potential job losses. "I don't see how this merger ultimately makes economic sense for the people trying to do it," he remarked. "I'm always concerned when a big company swallows another company. Every time big companies merge, a lot of people lose their jobs."

Clooney's remarks follow an open letter signed by over 170 Jewish cultural figures, including Hannah Einbinder and Joel Cohen, who also condemned the accusations against Ruffalo.
