Hollywood Creatives Defend Mark Ruffalo Amid Antisemitism Claims

Over 170 Jewish figures in and out of the entertainment industry have signed a letter supporting actor Mark Ruffalo, denouncing what they call a "smear campaign" against him. The letter, released Tuesday, counters accusations of antisemitism leveled at Ruffalo following recent statements.

Signatories include director Joel Coen, comedian Ilana Glazer, playwright Tony Kushner, director Todd Haynes, and actress Hannah Einbinder. The support letter reinforces Ruffalo's position, asserting that accusing him of antisemitism is a "dangerous weaponization." The signatories argued that highlighting connections between events in Gaza and Hollywood is "the essence of the Jewish ethical imperative."

Glazer stated separately that accusing Ruffalo of antisemitism for criticizing corporate mergers is an attempt to silence legitimate criticism. Director Kenneth Lonergan also voiced support, calling the claims against Ruffalo "a lie."

The controversy began with a social media post by Ruffalo on August 21, criticizing a potential merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. Ruffalo accused the Ellison family, behind the deal, of complicity in "genocide" against Palestinians and noted ties between Larry Ellison's Oracle company and the Israeli military.

In response, a Paramount spokesperson accused Ruffalo of using "antisemitic tropes" in a business dispute. Organizations like the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Creative Community for Peace also condemned his remarks. Additionally, industry executives including Haim Saban, Teddy Schwarzman, and Lawrence Bender issued a statement saying it is "unacceptable to conflate Jewish people, anti-Zionism, or antisemitism with discussions of economic deals simply because the individuals involved are Jewish."

Ruffalo has rejected the accusations, calling the antisemitism claims "fundamentally dishonest." He stated that criticizing Israeli prime ministerial policy, military technology contracts, or the executives providing them is not equivalent to criticizing the Jewish people.
