The story · English

A new survey by the Tzohar Rabbinical Organization's "Tzohar Index for Judaism and Tradition" reveals that a significant majority of Israelis wish to maintain or expand the teaching of Jewish heritage, tradition, and legacy within the state education system. The poll found that 72.5% of respondents prefer to keep the current scope of Jewish studies or increase it, with 37.7% specifically supporting an expansion and 34.8% favoring the status quo. Conversely, only 18.1% of those surveyed indicated a desire to reduce these studies, while 9.4% were undecided.

The survey, conducted by the content channel "Meshef" and reported by the Tzohar organization, also highlighted demographic differences in attitudes. Younger Israelis, aged 18-29, showed the highest support for expanding Jewish studies, with 43% in favor. In contrast, older respondents, aged 60 and above, were more inclined to preserve the existing curriculum, with 44.6% preferring the status quo.

Educational attainment also correlated with differing views. Individuals with secondary or post-secondary education showed strong support for expanding Jewish studies, ranging from 40% to 47.6%. However, those with advanced degrees exhibited the highest proportion of support for reducing these studies, at 28.9%.

When segmented by religious identification, 46% of secular Israelis preferred to maintain the current level of Jewish studies, with 13.6% supporting an increase and 30.8% favoring a reduction. Among the traditional Jewish population, 40.7% supported maintaining the status quo and 35.3% supported expansion. High levels of support for increasing Jewish studies were recorded among the religious (79.1%) and ultra-Orthodox (94.7%) communities.

Rabbi Asher Sabag, a board member of Tzohar, commented on the findings, stating that the results demonstrate a widespread public understanding of the importance of Jewish heritage education, emphasizing that it is not a luxury or exclusive to a specific segment of society. He further noted that these findings align with other data from the "Tzohar Index" indicating a Jewish awakening in Israel since the October 7th attacks, suggesting that Jewish heritage provides a sense of belonging and a moral justification for the ongoing conflict.
