Akerstein Replaces CEO Amid Weak Financial Results, Owner Takes Helm

The story · English

Akerstein Group, a manufacturer of precast concrete products for infrastructure, has announced the departure of its CEO, Amit Lang, following disappointing financial results in the second quarter. Zvika Akerstein, a controlling shareholder and son of Chairman Giora Akerstein, has stepped in to replace Lang, who had been in the position for less than a year. The company reported a 15% decrease in revenue to NIS 190 million and an 86% drop in net profit to NIS 2.3 million for the quarter. Akerstein attributed the poor performance to internal "grinding" and stated the company would "go back to basics" with a renewed focus.

During an investor call following the announcement, Zvika Akerstein acknowledged the subpar performance, stating, "The performance in recent quarters has been below our expectations." He emphasized that the change was made out of commitment to the company and its investors, and that the company needed "focused management that comes from the production floor." Akerstein clarified that his appointment as CEO is not temporary. The company also plans to appoint a chairman who is not a controlling shareholder.

The company's market value has fallen by 13% in the two days following the news, shedding NIS 309 million. Despite recent declines, Akerstein's market capitalization stands at NIS 2.1 billion, having doubled in value over the past three years. Investors, including institutional holders like Migdal, Clal Insurance, and Harel, are watching closely.

Analysts are drawing parallels to a similar situation at Rav-Bariach, another industrial company, where the owner took over as CEO after weak results in early 2024, leading to improved performance and a significant stock increase. Akerstein's management hopes for a similar turnaround, especially given the anticipated growth in the national infrastructure sector due to upcoming local elections, delayed national projects, and security fortification initiatives.
