Dermatologists Warn Against Common Acne Treatment Mistakes

The story · English

Dermatologists are advising against four common practices that can worsen acne breakouts, prolong healing, and lead to scarring. These include squeezing pimples, using harsh home remedies, constantly touching the face, and ignoring persistent acne.

Squeezing pimples is identified as the most frequent error. This action can push inflammation deeper into the skin, causing more significant swelling, pain, and potentially secondary infections. It also increases the risk of permanent scars and dark spots. For severe or painful pimples, consulting a dermatologist is recommended for faster, safer treatment.

Instead of squeezing, dermatologists suggest using targeted spot treatments. They also caution against using ineffective and potentially damaging home remedies like alcohol, toothpaste, lemon, or baking soda. These substances can harm the skin's natural barrier, causing irritation, redness, and peeling. Acne is an inflammatory process, not a dirt issue, and requires gentle, appropriate treatments rather than drying or burning methods.

Constant touching of the face, which people often do unconsciously, can prolong healing. Hands carry bacteria and dirt, and friction exacerbates inflammation. Picking at scabs restarts the healing process. For those struggling to avoid touching, specialized hydrocolloid patches can protect the spot and create a better healing environment.

Finally, persistent or recurring acne should not be ignored. While occasional pimples are normal, frequent, painful, or scarring breakouts warrant medical attention. Effective treatments, ranging from topical products to oral medications and advanced technologies, are available. Early treatment is crucial not only to clear existing blemishes but also to prevent long-term scarring.
