Expert Warns of Turkish Influence Deepening in Syria

Dr. Edy Cohen, an Arab affairs commentator for Channel 14, expressed concerns in an interview on "Israel HaBoker" about Turkey's expanding influence in Syria and a rise in anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sentiment. Cohen stated that Syria is undergoing significant changes since the fall of the Assad regime, leading to increased hostility towards Israel.

Cohen alleged that Turkey is deepening its control over key Syrian systems, including healthcare and communications, as part of a broader strategy to build influence in the neighboring country. He also described a covert intelligence war occurring behind the scenes between Israel and Turkey.

Regarding Syrian leadership, Cohen commented on Ahmad al-Shara, also known as Abu Muhammad al-Julani. He suggested that any Syrian desire for an agreement with Israel stems from a strategic interest in limiting Israel's operational freedom and reclaiming the Golan Heights, rather than a fundamental shift in relations. Cohen asserted that al-Julani is weak and seeking to stabilize his position, but will not concede any part of the Golan.

Cohen warned that a Syrian agreement with Israel, if reached, would primarily serve to restrict Israeli actions, stating, "You cannot bomb, you cannot do anything. That is what he wants." He reiterated that the ultimate goal for Syria in such an agreement is the return of the Golan.
