Crystal Palace's Hlaileli Sparks Debate Over New Substitution Rule After Man City Loss

The story · English

Israeli midfielder Enan Hlaileli made his Premier League starting debut for Crystal Palace in their 4-1 defeat to Manchester City at Selhurst Park, delivering a strong personal performance despite the heavy loss. Hlaileli completed 10 tackles, becoming the first player since N'Golo Kanté in 2015 to reach that number in a Premier League debut start. His defensive effort earned him the highest ratings among Palace players, with a 7.2 from Flashscore and 7.38 from WhoScored.

However, the focus shifted to a controversial moment during the second half when Hlaileli was substituted. Under a new rule implemented this season, a substituted player must leave the pitch via the nearest exit within ten seconds. Hlaileli was deemed to have delayed his exit, forcing Palace to play temporarily with ten men while his replacement waited nearly a minute to enter. This delay drew criticism, especially since Palace was trailing 3-1 and had no tactical reason to waste time.

TalkSPORT commentator Joe Shennan explained the rule's intent to prevent time-wasting but acknowledged that Palace was not trying to exploit it. The situation further angered fans when Manchester City’s substitute Ryan Schalki appeared to take longer to leave the field but was allowed to enter without delay, highlighting inconsistency in enforcement.

Former Arsenal and England player Martin Keown criticized the rule's uneven application and called for changes, noting that City’s substitutions took longer than Palace’s but were not penalized. Keown emphasized the need for consistent enforcement to maintain fairness in the game.
