Greek Foreign Minister Warns Turkey of Strong Response to Provocations in Eastern Mediterranean

Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis issued a firm warning to Turkey on Monday, stating that Athens is prepared to act decisively if its sovereign rights are violated. In an interview with Greek TV channel OPEN TV, he addressed the possibility of a maritime confrontation between the two countries, emphasizing that Greece will fully exercise its sovereign rights and respond to provocations from a position of strength.

When asked about Turkey potentially deploying two frigates to the area and whether Greece would respond in kind, Gerapetritis did not specify the number of vessels Greece might send but highlighted the country's military capabilities. He noted that Greece has demonstrated its ability to deploy frigates and F-16 fighter jets, and starting next year, it will also operate F-35 jets. He cited Greece's proven capabilities in Cyprus and during Middle East crises, asserting that Greece is currently in a stronger position.

Despite the tough stance, Gerapetritis stressed that Greece does not intend to close the diplomatic channel with Turkey and will continue dialogue. He expressed Greece's interest in maintaining talks with all neighbors, including those with whom it has disputes, noting that recent discussions with Turkey have yielded results in various areas.

The minister also referenced Greece's regional alliances, including the trilateral partnership with Israel and Cyprus and its relations with the United States. He stated that these alliances have enhanced Greece's security. This statement comes amid renewed rapprochement and deepening security and diplomatic cooperation between Israel and Greece in recent months.
