Erdogan Warns Greece Against Island Militarization Amid Israel Ties

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has issued a stern warning to Greece, demanding it "immediately change course" and cease the armament of Aegean islands that Turkey considers demilitarized. Erdogan stated that Greece should "turn away from this wrong path" and warned that Turkey's "calm position should not be perceived as weakness," cautioning that those who do "make a serious mistake."

The Turkish leader's remarks come in the wake of a new arms agreement signed between Greece and Israel, which has reportedly caused "serious concern" in Turkey, according to Maariv. Erdogan urged Athens to consider historical experience and warned of consequences for ignoring international agreements.

Despite the strong rhetoric, Erdogan also expressed Turkey's interest in "good neighborly relations" with Greece and affirmed that Turkey does not claim foreign territory. However, he made it clear that Turkey is prepared to react forcefully to actions it deems a violation of its rights, stating, "Turkey does not interfere in anyone's lands, but will not allow anyone to trample on its rights."

The heightened tensions coincide with strengthening defense ties between Greece and Israel. The recent strategic arms agreement between Athens and Jerusalem is seen by Turkish officials as a cause for concern, particularly given the long-standing dispute between Turkey and Greece in the Aegean Sea.

Meanwhile, Turkey continues to bolster its own military capabilities. Erdogan confirmed ongoing discussions about potentially rejoining the U.S. F-35 fighter jet program, while also emphasizing the continued development of Turkey's indigenous KAAN fighter jet and its own air defense systems.
