Israeli Left Launches Campaign Supporting Senior Hamas Official Detained by IDF

Hussam Abu Spiya, a senior Hamas figure and director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, was detained by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at the end of 2024 on suspicion of active involvement with Hamas. The hospital he managed was reportedly used as a military base by Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants, with over 240 terrorists arrested in the area, including 15 involved in the October 7 massacre. Weapons and ammunition were also found on the premises.

Despite these allegations and evidence, a broad campaign has emerged, led by Israeli left-wing organizations such as Physicians for Human Rights and B'Tselem, alongside Israeli academics and activists, demanding Abu Spiya's release. The campaign portrays him as a Palestinian Janusz Korczak, a reference to a humanitarian figure, even though Abu Spiya has been documented wearing Hamas military uniform and praised the October 7 Hamas attack.

The Israeli Medical Association (IMA) has also been pressured to intervene, with hundreds of medical professionals joining petitions and calls for his release. The IMA confirmed it contacted the Israel Prison Service regarding his welfare but denied being mobilized on his behalf, emphasizing its actions were based solely on medical ethics. The Supreme Court recently ruled to keep Abu Spiya in detention after reviewing classified security material confirming his terrorist activities.

This campaign highlights a rare instance where numerous human rights organizations and activists support an individual clearly linked to terrorism. The IMA stressed its commitment to medical ethics and international conventions, clarifying its efforts focus on ensuring medical care without endorsing any political or security claims. The case continues to provoke debate within Israel about the intersection of human rights advocacy and national security concerns.
