Israeli Tourist Released on Bail After Causing Major Wildfire in Crete

An Israeli tourist was released on a 10,000 euro bail following suspicion of causing a large wildfire in Crete, Greece. The release came with strict conditions, including judicial supervision and a requirement to report to the Greek diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv during the first five days of each month until his trial. Greek authorities suspect the fire started when sparks from a barbecue, used against regulations, were carried by strong winds onto dry vegetation, igniting the blaze.

The fire spread across the Rethymno area, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving over 60 firefighters, special units, and firefighting aircraft. Evacuation alerts were issued for local residents as the fire raged. Emergency services managed to contain the fire after approximately four hours. This incident occurred amid a severe wildfire season in Greece, during which strict restrictions have been imposed on activities that could generate sparks due to the high risk of fires.
