Moti Mishkovsky, Grandson of Rabbi Nathan Zuckowski, Sentenced to 20 Days in Military Prison

Moti Mishkovsky, grandson of Rabbi Nathan Zuckowski, head of the Gaon Yaakov Yeshiva and spiritual committee chairman of the Yated Ne'eman newspaper, was sentenced to 20 days in military prison following his arrest. Mishkovsky, a student at the Netivot Yitzhak Yeshiva in Tel Aviv, was detained near Ben Shemen Forest and later handed over to the military police at the Maccabim checkpoint. He was swiftly tried this morning and has already been transferred to Prison 10 to serve his sentence.

The arrest sparked significant attention within the Lithuanian Haredi community due to Mishkovsky's family background and affiliation with mainstream Lithuanian yeshivas. After his detention near Beit Gamzo junction, calls for protests emerged, but demonstrators were unable to reach the detention site. Overnight, a protest at the Maccabim checkpoint involved dozens of young men and rabbis opposing the extradition, leading to clashes with police and soldiers, though the arrest proceeded.

This incident occurs amid intensified enforcement efforts following Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara's recent directive to increase sanctions and proactive arrests of yeshiva students subject to conscription. Baharav-Miara criticized the current enforcement as insufficient and demanded a structured plan to ensure draft compliance among the Haredi sector. Previously, another yeshiva student was extradited after an investigation by Lahav 433, with potential criminal records influencing draft exemption processes; however, no such record was reported in Mishkovsky's case.

Mishkovsky previously studied at Beit Matityahu Yeshiva before transferring to Netivot Yitzhak under Rabbi Lao's leadership. The rapid arrest and sentencing have heightened concerns within the Haredi community facing increasing pressure over military conscription issues.
