Yeshiva Student Arrest Sparks Clashes at Maccabim Checkpoint Amid Draft Enforcement

Motty Mishkovsky, a yeshiva student from Tel Aviv's Netivot Yitzhak and grandson of Rabbi Natan Zuckowski, head of the Gaon Yaakov Yeshiva, was arrested near Ben Shemen Forest last night. Mishkovsky was detained by Israeli police after being identified as an IDF draft defaulter and was handed over to the military police shortly thereafter. The arrest triggered immediate unrest, with dozens of ultra-Orthodox youths blocking access to the Maccabim checkpoint, leading to clashes and public disorder between protesters and police forces called to the scene.

This incident follows a significant directive issued this week by Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, who instructed the security forces to resume proactive arrests of draft evaders across all sectors without discrimination. However, security officials warned the Attorney General that such operations within the ultra-Orthodox community face substantial challenges, including widespread disturbances that complicate police efforts. The defense establishment now fears that intensifying enforcement could provoke further violent confrontations nationwide.
