Yeshiva Student Detained in Ashdod, Then Released as Protesters Swarm Scene
Late at night near the Big shopping complex in Ashdod, patrol officers stopped a vehicle carrying several yeshiva students for a check. They discovered that one of the passengers was classified as an IDF draft evader, detained him, and called in the military police.
A message soon circulated under the headline “the kidnappers have arrived,” triggering a rapid mobilization. Within minutes, dozens of ultra-Orthodox protesters arrived, surrounded the officers, and protested the arrest.
Fearing a mass disturbance and a blockade of the city’s main traffic artery, the senior officer in charge of the checkpoint ordered the immediate release of the draft evader and the dismantling of the checkpoint. After he was freed, the crowd danced to “Otz'u Eitzah V'sufar,” then dispersed.
According to the report, the protesters succeeded in preventing another arrest of a yeshiva student on draft-evasion grounds.
