Grandson of Ziditshov Rebbe to Be Released After 20 Days in Military Jail

After 20 days in military detention for refusing to enlist, Shmuelka Pinter, grandson of the Ziditshov Rebbe and a student at the Bobov yeshiva, is set to be released tomorrow from Prison 10. His arrest sparked significant controversy within the ultra-Orthodox community, prompting continuous efforts by the Hasidic leadership to secure his early release. Despite these efforts, he will complete the full sentence before being freed.

The Ziditshov Rebbe himself led the campaign for his grandson's release, including participating in a large prayer and protest rally held by the Sanz Hasidim outside the prison. To mark Shmuelka's release, the Hasidic community is organizing a major welcoming event at 7 p.m. on Rabin Street, which will be closed to traffic. This street closure comes at the peak of the wedding season, where approximately 15 event halls operate, likely causing significant traffic congestion and disruptions for celebrants and guests in the area.

Community leaders emphasize that the gathering is intended solely to honor the Torah and strengthen religious commitment. The event is expected to draw large crowds of Hasidim, yeshiva students, and rabbis, all led by the Ziditshov Rebbe himself. The release and subsequent celebration highlight the ongoing tensions between the ultra-Orthodox community and the Israeli military regarding conscription.

Rabbi Yonatan Schwartz expressed strong criticism of the military's handling of the case, calling those responsible "subhuman" and urging them to feel shame. The community remains focused on the spiritual significance of the event amid the logistical challenges posed by the street closure.
