Israeli Security Officials See Reduced Risk of Military Conflict with Iran Following US Sanctions
Israeli defense sources report a decreased likelihood of an expanded military confrontation with Iran in the near future, following a series of meetings with senior US officials. The sources attribute this to US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a new, severe package of economic sanctions on Iran, aimed at "buying time" until after the US midterm elections. Despite this, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are increasing their preparedness for a worst-case scenario involving renewed attacks on Iran, enhancing intelligence capabilities, arms procurement, missile production, target bank development, and air force readiness for both defense and offense.
It remains uncertain whether the US can effectively deter and coerce countries supporting the Iranian regime through direct or indirect means such as oil trade, banking, and material transfers. Israeli security officials warn that without aggressive US enforcement and decisive measures, the sanctions may not achieve their intended outcomes. Additionally, there are concerns that without swift government intervention and legislative approval to expand the budget deficit, rapid procurement of essential weaponry and advanced combat systems will be impossible, potentially undermining Israel's ability to sustain intense combat operations.
Further discussions involving the IDF, Ministry of Defense, and Ministry of Finance are scheduled for early next week to advance this process. A security official emphasized that the ultimate decision rests with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who must promote legislation in the Knesset before the parliamentary recess to avoid strategic consequences.
In response to Trump's "D-Day" sanctions announcement, a spokesman for Iran's Revolutionary Guards issued a stern warning, stating that if war resumes, Iran would deploy "more destructive weapons" than previously used. He claimed that the Iranian missiles are far more devastating than those used in past conflicts and that any future Iranian weaponry would be fundamentally different in all respects if another war breaks out.
