Israeli Pilot Survives Bird Strike That Shattered Cockpit Window During Solo Flight

Haggai Dayan, a 22-year-old from Jerusalem and a former paratrooper wounded in the Iron Swords war, recently began flight training and was on a solo flight when a bird collided with his aircraft. The impact shattered the cockpit window, injuring Dayan's face and causing bleeding. Despite the injury and having only about 23 hours of flight experience, Dayan managed to maintain control and safely land the plane on his own.

Dayan's uncle, Uriel, also a pilot, described the incident as rare and dangerous, noting that the wind blew away Dayan's headphones and glasses during the collision. Uriel praised Dayan's composure and called him a hero for successfully completing the flight under such conditions. Dayan was taken to the hospital for initial medical treatment following the event.

Uriel requested that the flight school promptly return Dayan to flying after conducting an internal review, to prevent any trauma from the incident. The event highlights both the dangers of bird strikes in aviation and the remarkable calm and skill demonstrated by a young pilot in a critical situation.
