Australia Condemns Israel Over Decision Not to Prosecute Soldiers in Gaza Aid Worker Death

Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed strong anger towards Israel following the Israeli military prosecutor's decision not to charge soldiers involved in the attack on a humanitarian aid convoy in Gaza. The attack resulted in the deaths of seven aid workers from the organization World Central Kitchen, including Australian citizen Zomi Frankum. Wong summoned Israel's ambassador to Canberra, Hillel Newman, for an unusual clarification meeting to convey Canberra's dissatisfaction with the decision, calling it far from the accountability expected.

Wong criticized the Israeli military's explanation that the first strike was a "catastrophic mistake," questioning why two additional strikes occurred within minutes. She stated that disciplinary actions taken, including the dismissal of two officers and reprimands for three others, were insufficient given the gravity of the incident. The Foreign Minister also highlighted the timing of the decision, which coincided with International Humanitarian Day, describing it as particularly offensive.

The Israeli military acknowledged serious failures in identification, procedural implementation, and decision-making that led to the incident. Despite this, Australia insists the case remains unresolved and pledged to continue pressing Israel to ensure justice for Frankum and her colleagues. The diplomatic tension between the two countries is expected to escalate as a result of this unresolved issue.
