IDF Finds No Clear Identification of MSF Building in Gaza Shelling That Killed Two Staff
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released an investigation into the February 2024 deaths of two Doctors Without Borders (MSF) workers in Khan Yunis, Gaza. The inquiry revealed that the IDF forces could not identify the building as belonging to MSF because the organization's name and emblem were displayed only on the front facade, while the troops approached from the rear. The building was located in a position perceived as threatening to the forces, and since they were unaware of its affiliation and expected enemy presence, they fired a shell at it.
Unlike other nearby structures, the building’s lights were off, and no movement was observed inside or around it. Due to these circumstances, the Military Police Investigations Unit (Metach) decided not to pursue further investigation. However, the Military Attorney General ordered a review of disciplinary measures against some of the personnel involved, citing certain operational failures.
This report clarifies the IDF’s position that the lack of visible MSF markings from the soldiers’ vantage point contributed to the tragic incident, and it highlights ongoing accountability steps within the military command.
