Israeli Health Authorities Warn Against Entering Several Northern Streams Due to Bacterial Contamination
The Israeli Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environmental Protection have issued warnings against entering several streams in northern Israel after water samples revealed elevated levels of fecal coliform bacteria. Sampling conducted on August 16 and 17, 2026, found bacterial counts exceeding the Health Ministry's safety limit of 400 coliform units per 100 milliliters of water in multiple locations.
Significant contamination was detected in the Hexbani Stream's Hexagon Pool area, with levels reaching up to 2,300 coliform units near the hydroelectric station and 1,800 at the confluence promenade leading to the Jordan River. The Jordan River itself showed elevated bacteria counts at several bridges, including 1,900 at Metzud Atarot and 1,700 at the traffic jam bridge. Other affected streams include Banias, Gilabon, Zaki, and Kaziv, with bacterial levels ranging from 670 to 1,500 coliform units in various spots.
Authorities have advised the public and local municipalities to avoid water contact in these areas until stable and safe sampling results are confirmed. The source of the contamination remains unknown, and routine biweekly sampling by the Nature and Parks Authority continues. The ministries pledged ongoing monitoring and public updates as necessary.
This precautionary measure aims to protect public health from potential waterborne infections until the contamination source is identified and resolved.
