British-Jewish Activist Faces Trial for Supporting Hamas Attack on Gaza

Tony Greenstein, a British-Jewish activist and co-founder of the UK-based Palestine Solidarity Campaign, is on trial for allegedly supporting Hamas following the October 7, 2023 attack that triggered the ongoing conflict. The charges stem from three posts Greenstein published on social media platform X on the day Hamas launched its surprise assault. Although Hamas is designated a terrorist organization in the UK under the 2000 Terrorism Act, Greenstein did not explicitly name Hamas but referred to "the uprising in the Gaza ghetto," which prosecutors argue is a clear endorsement of Hamas's actions.

During the court hearing, it was revealed that Greenstein urged the public to share his posts and stated, "It is time to fight," while calling for support of the "planned and audacious attack on the Zionist enemy." Prosecutors contend this amounts to moral and intellectual encouragement of a terrorist group. Greenstein was arrested at his home in December 2023 and denies supporting Hamas's ideology, with his defense expected to argue that his language did not constitute an actual call for support.

The prosecution reminded the jury that despite the political and emotional sensitivities surrounding the Middle East conflict, their verdict must be based solely on British law. The trial is ongoing.
