Apple renews 'Widow's Bay' for a second season before first season finale
Apple TV+ has renewed the horror-comedy series "Widow's Bay" for a second season just days before the first season finale airs on June 17. Along with the renewal, Apple also announced a multi-year overall deal with the show’s creator, writer, and executive producer, Katie Dippold, signaling strong confidence in one of the service’s standout new shows this year.
"Widow's Bay" premiered on Apple TV+ on April 29 and quickly drew attention for its unusual mix of horror, mystery, and comedy. It received positive reviews and became one of the spring television season’s biggest surprises.
The series centers on Tom Loftis, the mayor of a small town on a secluded island off the coast of New England, played by Emmy winner Matthew Rhys. Loftis tries to revive the local economy and turn the town into a successful tourist destination, while residents believe the island is cursed. As visitor numbers rise, events begin to unfold that once seemed like unfounded local legends.
The show depicts a community almost cut off from the modern world, with no proper Wi-Fi and limited cellular reception. In that setting, Loftis is also trying to build a better future for his teenage son and keep the community from economic collapse. Dippold said of the renewal, "The second season is about how everything is great on the island and there is no reason to worry." Apple did not reveal any further plot details for the new season, but renewing the show before the finale suggests satisfaction with its performance and audience response.
