De la Fuente confirms Williams and Yamal will start on the bench

Spain will begin its 2026 World Cup campaign on Monday at 19:00 in Atlanta against Cape Verde, as the European champions chase their first world title since 2010. Coach Luis de la Fuente said the match is the immediate priority and stressed that Spain must move “step by step.”

The biggest positive for Spain is Lamine Yamal’s fitness. The winger had been doubtful because of a left hamstring injury, but he has returned to full training, received medical clearance and looked sharp. De la Fuente confirmed that Yamal is available but will not start, saying he is fit to play only part of the match, likely in the second half: “He is not ready for 90 minutes, but he is ready to take part for a certain period.”

The coach said the same plan applies to Nico Williams and Victor Muñoz, who could also be used from the bench if the game requires it. He added that Spain’s preparations have gone as planned and that he is sticking with his original ideas for the lineup, despite being tempted by the quality in the squad.

De la Fuente was especially emphatic about Spain’s midfield, calling it the best in the world. He named the Ballon d’Or winner, Pedri, Fabián Ruiz, Martín Zubimendi and Gavi, and said some excellent players will have to be left out. He also addressed Marc Cucurella, who is widely reported to be close to joining Real Madrid, saying that would not distract him and that the left back is “a sure bet” and possibly one of the best defenders in the world. On Spain’s title chances, de la Fuente said being a favorite means little: “We are advancing with a lot of humility.”
