Former Student Reflects on Lasting Impact of Teacher Tamima Boterman in Kiryat Shmuel

Rabbi Dr. Meir Ben Shahar recently returned to his studies at Aharon-Hara'ah School in Kiryat Shmuel and bid farewell to Tamima Boterman, his former homeroom teacher from the 1980s. Boterman taught him and his classmates not only academic subjects but also instilled curiosity, discipline, confidence, and a love of learning. She served as their homeroom teacher for two years during fourth and fifth grades, going beyond the curriculum to teach essential life skills such as organization and study habits.

Ben Shahar recalls how Boterman made lessons memorable by encouraging questions and curiosity rather than rote learning. He especially remembers her reading children’s books during snack breaks and involving students in special lessons and school ceremonies. One notable moment was when she asked him to present a class lesson on a rare solar eclipse he had researched, fostering his confidence and enthusiasm.

Over the years, Boterman remained a close family friend and a cherished figure in the community of Kiryat Shmuel. Despite the passage of time, Ben Shahar says the respect and affection he felt as a student have endured. Boterman’s sudden passing last night brought a flood of memories and a poignant sense of loss, as he reflects on the lasting influence she had on his life and many others.

Her legacy is remembered not only through the knowledge she imparted but through the genuine care and personal connections she maintained with her students and their families.
