Rabbi Asher Zigdon Officially Installed as First Chief Rabbi of Harish
A historic event took place in Harish with the official installation of Rabbi Asher Zigdon as the city's first chief rabbi. The ceremony was attended by hundreds of residents, rabbis, public figures, and dignitaries, including Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, the Chief Rabbi of Israel and President of the Council of Torah Sages, Rabbi Reuven Elbaz, head of a prominent yeshiva, Justice Minister and Minister of Religious Services Yariv Levin, Harish Mayor Yochai Fargi, city rabbis, and community leaders. The event was held in the city's sports hall and was led by educator Rabbi Yosef Amar in a festive and uplifting atmosphere.
During the ceremony, Rabbi Zigdon was formally crowned with traditional rabbinic garments, including a frock coat and homburg hat, symbolizing his new role and public responsibility. Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of appointing high-caliber city rabbis and Torah teachers who serve as halachic authorities for the entire community. He highlighted Harish's diverse population and praised Rabbi Zigdon as a unifying figure capable of embracing all residents. Rabbi Yosef stressed the need for approachable and warm rabbinic leadership that continues the legacy of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef by strengthening rabbinic institutions and expanding religious services across Israeli cities.
Rabbi Reuven Elbaz also spoke, praising Harish for appointing a knowledgeable, beloved, and community-oriented rabbi who fosters connection to Torah. Rabbi Zigdon then addressed the audience, quoting the sages: "I do not give you rulership, but servitude," underscoring that the rabbinate's primary mission is to assist the public, bring people closer to Torah and Jewish tradition, and serve with love and dedication. The event marked a significant milestone for Harish as it establishes its religious leadership framework amid its growth.
