Rabbi Israel Mental Installed as Chief Rabbi of Gateshead's Torah Community
After nearly five years without a chief rabbi, the Torah city of Gateshead warmly welcomed Rabbi Israel Mental as its new Maradatra (chief rabbi) on a historic day of celebration. Rabbi Mental, formerly the rabbi of the prominent KAJ community in Washington Heights, New York, relocated to Gateshead to be near his children and officially assumed the rabbinical leadership of the city. The position had been vacant since 2020 when Rabbi Shraga Feivel Zimmerman left to serve as chief rabbi of the Federation community in London.
The community prepared extensively for Rabbi Mental's arrival, which was marked by a grand procession along Gateshead's main street, Buick Street, attended by many residents, scholars, and community leaders. Leading Torah figures present included Rabbi Avraham Gurevitz, head of Gateshead Yeshiva and senior rabbinic authority in Europe, Rabbi Yaakov Arentroy, head of Sunderland Yeshiva, and other prominent rabbis from across Europe.
The formal coronation ceremony took place at the Buick banquet hall, lavishly decorated for the occasion. The event featured singing by the Gateshead chapel musicians and a children's choir, with Rabbi Yehuda Leib Vitler of Manchester's Shaarei Chaim Yeshiva serving as master of ceremonies. Community leader Rabbi Meir Menashe Badner opened with blessings, followed by Psalms recited by Rabbi Mordechai Yosef Karnovsky and a special prayer for the recovery of Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Ben Attil, head of Brisk Yeshiva.
Congratulatory letters were read from leading Torah authorities worldwide, including Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch, heads of Slabodka Yeshiva, Rabbi Meir Tzvi Bergman, Rabbi Baruch Dov Povarsky, and the Vizhnitz Rebbe of London. The highlight was the reading and signing of the official appointment document by all local rabbis and yeshiva heads, followed by enthusiastic singing and dancing.
Rabbi Mental was then presented with a new tallit, donated by veteran community member Rabbi Yosel Schleider, and delivered his inaugural address emphasizing the importance of Torah study and the vital role of God-fearing community members who support Torah life. The event was attended by many senior Torah leaders from Europe, including Rabbi Zimmerman, Rabbi Plattiel Schwartz, Rabbi Chaim Heimlich, Rabbi Avraham Arentroy, and other distinguished rabbis from Gateshead and beyond.
