French Tourist Attacks Israeli Visitor With Knife in Australian Hostel Over Anti-Israel Sentiments

A 25-year-old French tourist, Leo Raymond Cottin, was charged with a hate-motivated assault after attacking an Israeli tourist at the Mad Monkey Backpackers hostel in Cairns, Australia. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. two days prior to August 15, 2026. Cottin reportedly hugged the Israeli against his will, then pulled out a 20-centimeter knife while making anti-Israel remarks such as "You kill people in Gaza," "I won't stay in a hotel with an Israeli," and "F*** Israel."

Cottin's lawyer, Rowan King, stated in court that the assault charge referred to the unwanted hug and denied evidence of further physical harm. King also noted the hostility involved other hostel guests and that the remarks targeted the complainant's nationality, not religion. Prior to the attack, Cottin sent WhatsApp messages to a group of 14 backpackers, including a photo of the Israeli in military attire from social media, and wrote, "Next time I see him at the hostel, maybe we'll go somewhere without cameras."

The prosecution opposed bail, citing risks of further offenses and danger to the public, especially Israelis or Jews. Judge Tom Bryce denied bail, and Cottin remains in custody until his next hearing scheduled for September 11, 2026. The case highlights tensions involving national identity and safety concerns for Israeli travelers abroad.
