French Tourist Attacks Israeli Visitor With Knife at Australian Hostel Over Anti-Israel Sentiments

A 25-year-old French tourist, Leo Raymond Cottin, has been charged with a hate-motivated assault after attacking an Israeli tourist at a hostel in Cairns, Australia. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. two days ago at the Mad Monkey Backpackers hostel on Sheridan Street. Cottin reportedly hugged the Israeli visitor against his will, then pulled out a 20-centimeter knife while making anti-Israel remarks such as "You kill people in Gaza," "I won't stay in a hotel with an Israeli," and "F*** Israel."

Cottin's lawyer, Rowan King, stated in court that the assault charge pertains to the unwanted hug and that there is no evidence of further physical harm. King also noted that the hostility was based on nationality rather than religion and mentioned ongoing tensions between the Israeli and other hostel guests. Prior to the attack, Cottin sent messages in a WhatsApp group of 14 backpackers, including a photo of the Israeli from social media in military attire, and wrote, "Next time I see him at the hostel, maybe we'll go somewhere without cameras."

The prosecution opposed bail, citing concerns over potential further offenses and risks to the public, especially those of Israeli or Jewish descent. Judge Tom Bryce denied bail, and Cottin will remain in custody until his next court hearing scheduled for September 11. Authorities indicated that Cottin is likely to face imprisonment in Australia.
